TRMC Respiratory Care Honors Marguerite Merritt Posthumously with PHIL Award

The Tift Regional Medical Center (TRMC) Respiratory Care Department presented The PHIL Award posthumously to long-serving respiratory therapist Marguerite Merritt at a recent ceremony. A dedicated Respiratory Therapist at TRMC for more than 47 years, Marguerite passed away in August 2025. Her family and close friends accepted this award on Marguerite’s behalf.

The PHIL Award is a nationally recognized hospital-based recognition program dedicated to honoring outstanding respiratory therapists who provide exemplary care and treatment for patients with respiratory illnesses, as nominated by patients, family members and other caregivers. The award honors and recognizes the unsung heroes in the respiratory profession who understand that each breath matters.

Speakers at the award ceremony included Respiratory Care Director Sandy Wells and Pulmonary Medicine/Critical Care Specialist Dr. Rubal Patel. Members of Administration attended, including Southwell President/CEO Chris Dorman and Chief Nursing Officer Tonia Garrett.

During this tribute, Marguerite was remembered as a dedicated clinician who was the picture of selflessness. She was described as skilled, kind, caring, and always willing to help co-workers. Marguerite was known for always putting patients first, exemplifying a life of serving others.
